We know getting a Air conditioner installation is one of the biggest investments you can make as a homeowner. The last thing i want to make clear before we move onto this article. The most important thing you can do as a homeowner to help prevent unexpected air conditioner repairs or heater repairs is do get air conditioning maintenances or HVAC tune ups regularly or twice a year. While getting an annual maintenances done does help, getting an Air conditioner service done twice a year is better to avoid costly Air conditioning replacement. Thank you and we hope you enjoy this article, We love serving Clearwater Florida!

Our topic for today: In my experience as a HVAC technician in Clearwater Florida and as a HVAC contractor at newtons heating and air conditioning i can safely say one of the most common questions i get is about duct cleaning. When people ask me about this i generally do not recommended it. Let me kind of explain what they do during a duct cleaning and what my experience i have had with it in the past working for another HVAC contractor. How it works is a brush spins in a circle and there is a vacuum in the center of it. The idea of it is as the brush spins in a circle, it cleans the duct work by knocking off the dust and than the vacuum in the middle sucks it up and the duct work is clean right? How can you go wrong? My ac system is always running so my duct work must be dirty and my duct work could easily be 30 years old! Well here is the problem, its how new duct work is made now. Originally back in the 70’s most duct work was made out of metal here in clearwater Florida. In the northern states most companies use metal duct to this day because its better suited for gas furnace’s that put out a lot more heat than the heat pumps or heat strips we have in clearwater Florida. Now duct cleaning works great for metal duct work because it generally doesn’t develop any biological growth and its smooth so when a brush goes through it can actually clean off the dust. That is generally what you will see on duct cleaning ads is before and after photos of metal duct work. Well here in clearwater Florida we have something called flex duct and duct board plenums or in another words fiber glass duct work. So here comes all of the problems. Firstly for most duct work here in clearwater Florida you will get biological growth and that brush will do absolutely nothing for that. I remember when i was a helper doing duct cleaning that we would clean a duct and it would look exactly the same way and the lead i was helping would always say its a dog and pony show. For flex duct work more than anything it seems to just beat up your duct work. The only situation i have seen it work is if you just did a remodel on your home and drywall dust got kicked up and went into your duct. So this is the worse of it right? Well here comes the next major problem for fiber glass duct work. When that brush is smacking back and forth in the duct work it makes fiber glass particulates go into the air and you guessed it now you are breathing in fiber glass. At one point California actually almost banned duct cleaning in that way for this reason. Now they just put more strict regulations on how you are able to do it. So in conclusion we do not recommend duct cleaning as a residential HVAC service for most people in Clearwater Florida because not only for most homes it will not clean your duct work it can damage it and release fiber glass particulates into the air.
