Our topic for today: There are many different types of heating and cooling systems and each one has its own benefits for the climate we live in. The most common type of system in northern states but is very rare in Clearwater Florida for our tropical climates is gas furnace’s. I can always tell when a customer is from up north and they feel like the air coming out of their vents and think its just not hot enough like the system i had up north. At newtons heating and air conditioning we do have a good amount of experience because some of our HVAC technicians lived up north and did ac and all of the systems they worked on were gas furnaces. The main benefit of these systems is they do great in extremely cold climates where it gets into the negative degree digits. The natural gas goes through something called a heat exchanger the unit actually lights this gas on fire to make it go through the heat exchanger. Then air passes by this and blows into your home and then you get heat. In Clearwater Florida we rarely see the temperature go below 40 degree so we don’t really need that extreme amount of heat. There are very limited homes in Clearwater Florida that have gas running to them so we use electric heat. How electric heat works is on the inside of your air handler, there is elements that kind of look like what’s in your toaster oven. This work good for us but they are not very energy efficient, its like have your toaster oven on not stop. It takes a lot of electricity and is what takes the most amount of power in your home. The only thing that can some what compete with it is your oven. Your electric heat is also what makes your house smell like its burning when you first turn your heat on because its burning off all of the dust that built up over it over the past year. Now what they make now to combat the high cost for your electric heat is something called a heat pump. To put what a heat pump does in laymen’s terms is normally your ac blows cold air inside and hot air outside. What a heat pump does is reverse this and make cold air blow outside and hot air inside. This is a lot more energy efficient and they primarily used down south. When they are used up north when it gets cold they actually freeze at the condenser into a solid block of ice. For cooling they are typically the same units weather your up north or down south. So in conclusion up north for heating and cooling they use gas furnaces and for heating cooling here in Clearwater Florida we use electric heat and heat pumps.
