Our topic for today: In my experience at newtons heating and air conditioning or really just in the air conditioning industry i can safely say there is a couple of signs you should look out for to know if you have a good HVAC technician for your Clearwater Florida home. One of the most over looked aspects in our industry especially with newer equipment is something called sub cooling and super heat. You maybe thinking what is that? I will do my best to put it in laymen’s terms so that it is easy to understand. You can think of your subcooling as how much refrigerant is getting to your indoor unit. Super heat you can think of it has how much of the refrigerant is actually inside your indoor unit. These two crucial numbers can tell you a lot of what is going on with your system. With some of the older equipment such as r22 systems, technicians tended to just feel the pipe and tell if its cold and just look at one pressure on their gauges. One of the most common expression in our industry is beer can cold for this pipe. This may have worked on r22 systems because they are much more forgiving than, what the newer equipment is for your refrigerant charge. So most people that have been doing this for a long time were taught this way from the very beginning and maybe still using this practice. I admittedly was taught this way when i first started in the HVAC industry and than the nightmare happens. Customer calls back and says my unit is not cooling and we go out there and the pressure looks good? The pipe feels beer can cold, what can be happening? Thankfully i talked to another HVAC technician that I was working at the company i was working at and now is currently working with newtons heating and air conditioning. He asked me what is your subcooling and super heat? So now me looking like a deer in head lights asking what do you mean by that? the HVAC technician explained to me exactly what is and what the different tool was that i needed in order to check it. So i go to the supply house and pick up these gauges that tell you sub cooling and super heating and sure enough the unit was way under charged causing the unit to not cool. On the flip side I’ve seen it where people will just charge by pressure and the unit would be way over charged. This is terrible because if your unit is way over charged it can destroy your compressor which is one of the biggest ticket items on your system. So in conclusion ask your HVAC technician is my sub cooling and super heat proper and see if he looks like a deer in headlights and make sure he can actually take care of your Clearwater Florida home.
