In my experience as an HVAC contractor and as a HVAC technician I can safely say i get questions from home owners about what are the different heating system types and what they should consider installing in their home. There are 3 main types of heating equipment you can do for your heating installation but today i would like to talk about gas furnaces. Gas furnace are the most efficient at heating your home so why don’t all homes in Florida normally have gas furnaces? The reason is because natural gas is very rare in Florida so home owners rarely have the option to pick gas furnaces. The reason is we have a very tropical climate and we tend to not have very cold winters with temperatures rarely getting below 35 degrees so gas furnaces are generally not necessary. We typically use electric heat or heat pumps but i can talk about these in a later article. If you every lived up north or in very select homes in Florida you may have had natural gas piped into your home. How these systems operate is natural gas goes into your furnace and it has a ignitor on it. The natural gas will actually be lit on fire, these flames will go into a metal tube called a heat exchanger and air blows past the heat exchanger and you get hot air. These are ideal for really colder climates and can handle negative temperatures out side and still keep your home very warm. The main draw back to gas furnaces is due to gas furnaces being so rare in Florida most HVAC technicians and HVAC contractors don’t have very much experience with them. You really want someone that know how to work on gas furnaces because they can actually release carbon monoxide into the air and you can not smell it. Sadly many American’s die every year from carbon monoxide poisoning. fortunately at newtons heating and air conditioning we do have technicians that lived up north where 9 out of 10 houses had gas furnace’s. So we do have experienced HVAC technicians in this type of heating system. So in conclusion when doing a heating installation if you pick a gas furnace also make sure your HVAC contractor or HVAC technician has experience with this type of equipment.
