In my experience as a HVAC technician and as the HVAC contractor of newtons heating and air conditioning i can safely say every year there is a customer that will call and thinks their unit is having a problem even though their system is fine. The main problem is that i turned on my heat and now it smells like something is burning on the inside of my unit. Let me explain what that is and why it is completely normal for your air conditioning systems in Florida. If you have ever lived up north you know that most of your HVAC equipment and your oven all run off of gas. Natural gas is very common up north in the united states because they have much harsher winters than we have in Florida. This is because we are in a tropical climate. How a gas furnace works is natural gas goes into your unit and than there is a ignitor and it actually lights the natural gas on fire. The natural gas fire goes through something called a heat exchanger and the air blows past it and creates hot air. Now when you need to get a heater repair on this, if its a cracked heat exchanger it can be very expensive. Now heater repairs work much different in Florida because we typically have electric heat. How these units work is on the inside of your unit there is something called a heat strip. They can come in many different size but the most common for residential homes in Florida is 5kw, 7.5kw and 10kw. When these turn on they glow bright red and look like what is on the inside of your toaster. This how people calling us for a heater repair comes into play because it makes a burning smell. It is actually completely normal and what is happening is over the year during summer dirt and dust get built up on your heater and it will burn it off. That is why you get that smell and you will actually have that smell every year. So if your in Florida and you just turned on your heat and you haven’t in months and it makes a smell its completely normal!
