In my experience as a HVAC technician or as a HVAC contractor at newtons heating and air conditioning I can safely say there is one one particular brand of equipment that commonly has a problem when it turn on in heat and its not the units fault. This brand of equipment is rheme and when i have a customer call me they will say i turned my system on in heat and it came on in cooling! This is for heat pump systems in particular. Let me kind of explain how heat pump equipment works and you can understand where the problem comes in. On a heat pump system you normally have 2 sources of heat. 1 is your emergency heat and the other is just your HVAC system. On a straight cool system you will just have emergency heat or just your heat strips. Heat strips are called emergency heat on heat pumps and on straight cool thermostats its just called heat because that is all they have. The reason for that is in the scenario your ac is having a problem with your outdoor unit you still have your heat on the inside unit thus you get emergency heat. How your ac works to put it in layman’s terms is that hot air blows outside and cold air blows into your home. A heat pump system actually reverses that and makes hot air blow inside and cold air outside. On your thermostat you have you actually need to program it and tell it this is a straight cool system or this is a heat pump. There is a wire called your o wire which is typically orange and this is the wire on your thermostat that controls making your heat pump turn on in cooling or heating. Now this is where it gets tricky, on every other brand of equipment weather it a Trane, Carrier or Lenox the process of making your heat pump turn on in cooling or heating is different. Rheme decided it wanted to be different than all of the other brands. So you have to program a thermostat one way for every other brand of equipment and another way just for rheme. This throws off a lot of HVAC contractors and HVAC technicians especially if they don’t have a lot of experience with these units. Now here is the kicker say you go to turn on your system on in heat and its programed for the other brands of equipment and not rheme your unit will turn on in cooling instead of heating! On the flip side if you programed a thermostat for a rheme and its another brand and you turned it on in cooling and it would turn on in heating! The good news for this being one of the most common heater repairs is we just have to reprogram your thermostat to match what heat pump brand you have and here at newtons heating and air conditioning we can do that for free! So its very important to pick out a knowledgeable HVAC technician or HVAC contractor when your looking to get a heater repair.
