So what are uv lights and do we recommend them or why? Well let me kind of explain what they do and you can decide if they are a good fit for your home. On the inside of your air conditioning system or air handler it is wet and damp, this is a perfect breading ground for biological growth. The reason it is wet and damp is because of your evaporator coil which gets to 40 degrees, so it sweats like a soda can on a hot day. So what is the problem of having biological growth in your HVAC system? Well firstly it can greatly reduce the indoor air quality in your home. All of your indoor air passing through your air handler or evaporator coil and that air gets distributed into your home through your air vents. This is Where all of the biological growth gets built up at. The 2nd problem is if your evaporator coil does get built up with biological growth it can greatly reduce air flow. That can cause damage not only to your evaporator fan motor which is already a expensive enough of a HVAC repair but also damage your compressor. If you compressor goes bad, it is the number 1 most expensive HVAC repair you can get done on your system. So what can you do about it? Well you can install a uv light and what this does is emit uv rays like the sun to prevent all biological growth and will kill the growth that is currently in your system and it can also help kill virus and pollens that cause allergies. That’s why when you go onto the street or road and you never see Biological growth even though the road is always getting wet and never getting cleaned. You can kind of think of it like how your bath tub gets dirty with biological growth. This is because your bath tub always has water going through it so it builds up with that growth. Now say your ready to install a uv light, this is where hiring a properly trained HVAC contractor or HVAC technician becomes important for your home in Saint Pete. Firstly with a uv light you must also install a 2nd transformer. I can not count how many times i have seen another company in Saint Pete install the uv light and use the transformer that is on the system already. The uv light takes more power and the transformer that is on the system is not rated for that. So i get a call from a customer and i have to do another costly HVAC repair because not only do i have to replace the bad transformer on the system currently bad because it was not meant to also power a uv light but also add a 2nd transformer for their uv light. So in conclusion we do recommend a uv light for every customer in Saint Pete or all of Pinellas county because biological growth on the inside of your air handler is extremely common. A uv light can not only prevent this but also extend the life of your system. You should also have a HVAC tune up done as well so that we can catch this early because if to much builds up we may have to clean your entire system which is also expensive.
