In my experience has a HVAC technician and a HVAC contractor I have learned a couple of trick and problems that people commonly over look. On a heat pump system you have 2 sources of heat. One is called your electric heat strip and the other is your air conditioning system itself. How a heat pump system works in layman’s terms is normally your ac blows cold air inside and hot air outside. With a heat pump it can actually reverse this process and make cold air blow out side and hot air blow inside. This is much more energy efficient than a electric heat strip. A electric heat strip goes on the inside of your air handler and it glows kind of like what’s on the inside of your toaster. This is not very energy efficient, its like your microwave running non stop. There are many different things that can go wrong on a heat pump system. So on your thermostat they will label your electric heat as emergency heat and on a heat pump system thermostat your ac system as normal heat. The reason this is, is because if something happens to your heat pump system or your condensing unit you can still use your electric heat and get by. I can not count how many times I’ve seen another HVAC contractor or HVAC technician tell their customers that maybe their compressor is bad or maybe condenser fan motor is bad so they cant use their heat until they get that repaired. Nothing is worse than to be stuck without heat in the middle of winter. This is why i explain what electric heat is or emergency heat is to every customer because with just a flick of a button you can still have enough heat to get you by. Now there is multiple sizes of heat strips ranging from 5kw, 7.5kw and 10kw for most residential home. If you are lucky you may just have a big enough heat strip on its own to warm your home. A lot of systems called straight cools only use electric heat. So in conclusion our heat pumps repair tip is heat pumps are much more energy efficient but if you turn your unit onto emergency heat you may just be able to get by.
